Welcome to all students, parents, and community members. We have planned and developed strategies to make D.M. Smith Middle School a 21st century student-centered learning environment. At D.M. Smith, our faculty has been trained to provide our students with a quality learning experience that will not only prepare our students for the skills needed to pass the end of the year state assessment or College and Career Ready, but for the world. Our theme this year is “Professionals Preparing Professionals of Tomorrow.” The strike through of the word middle in the school’s name above does not mean that we wish to change the name of the school. It is an expression and a reminder that we would like to reinforce that our focus is to prepare students to acquire the skills needed to obtain careers in high skilled areas. To prepare our students, we will engage them in learning activities that require them to simulate real world adaptable situations across all subject areas. This approach will capture the attention of our students and engage them in classroom content at a high level. In addition, we will be requiring that students think and work, which is required of students today, if they wish to work in high skilled careers of tomorrow. This approach to teaching and learning balances challenging students with a rigorous curriculum and capturing their attentions so that they remained engaged.
Although we will plan to instruct our students with high levels of rigor in relevant student-centered formats, we more importantly, value the relationships that we form with our students, parents, and community members. Without positive, supportive relationships throughout the school community environment, the strategies that we employ will not effectively perform the functions for which they were designed. Our school community culture will be the component that magnifies any skill or knowledge that we utilize in our school. It is in the best interest of our students that we work together to prepare them to acquire the skills to obtain careers in high skilled fields. This is among many reasons why I am excited to work with the parents and community members of the D.M. Smith Preparatory School Community.
